Build Your Own Greenhouse Considerations when building a Green House, Greenhouse Styles By Brandon Beckham, Staff Writer for the Home Design Connection
A Greenhouse makes a great addition to any home where an avid gardener resides and is looking to grow year round. The Home Design Connection has noticed a national trend among homeowners looking to add a Greenhouse to their home, specifically a Do-It-Yourself Greenhouse kit. When considering a Green House Addition, it is important to consider: budget, planning, location, types of greenhouses and greenhouse building materials. A leading factor in building a new greenhouse is space and location. Many homeowners build their new greenhouse in the backyard or garden area of their property. Before purchasing your greenhouse kit or greenhouse materials, make sure that you have checked with your local building code department to avoid encountering troubles with your new greenhouse addition.
The location that you pick for your greenhouse should, obviously, be conducive to growing plants. Plenty of sunshine is important – but also take into consideration the types of plants that your will be primarily growing. Are they plants and flowers that need plenty of sunlight or just some sunlight – know before you build your greenhouse. Make sure that your green house is going to be in a location that allows access to irrigation, heating and one that will shelter your plants from cold gusts of wind. Greenhouse Kits provide a variety of building options to meet your building needs.
When deciding on a Greenhouse, you’ll need to decide on whether you want an attached greenhouse or a freestanding greenhouse. The freestanding greenhouse is probably the must popular image that many people have in their minds when they are thinking of a Greenhouse. Freestanding, means simply that it has four walls and is not attached to another structure, such as the home. An attached greenhouse is one that is, well – attached. Attached Greenhouses are ones that are usually attached to the home or another structure that is preexisting.
Next, once you have decided on either a freestanding greenhouse or an attached greenhouse, you will want to choose a greenhouse style, including: Barn Style Greenhouse, Gable Style Greenhouse, Dome Greenhouse, Hoop Greenhouse, or Gothic Style Greenhouse. The style of greenhouse that you are interested in will determine your budget and the building materials that you will need to purchase to construct your new greenhouse system.
Barn style Greenhouse are greenhouses built with short walls, a wide greenhouse roof and wide interior. A barn style green house can be built as either a freestanding or attached greenhouse. A gable style greenhouse is generally attached to a preexisting structure, which means you will only need to build three walls for this style of greenhouse. The greenhouse roof panels are flat, sloping with vertical greenhouse sidewalls.
Dome Greenhouses are green houses domed from the ground-up. Dome Green Houses can only be built as a freestanding greenhouse. When it comes to your building project budget, this is a more expensive style greenhouse system, as the greenhouse glass is curved.
Hoop Greenhouses are greenhouses built using pvc pipe, metal pipe or plastic pipes, bent in a hoop shape. They are an inexpensive style of greenhouse, as they are built from plastic materials, not glass. This style greenhouse is a good starter greenhouse for the individual that thinks they might be interested in year round gardening with a greenhouse addition, but is not entirely committed to making a large investment yet.
Gothic Greenhouse Additions are built with an historical gothic look. A gothic greenhouse can be either freestanding or attached, the greenhouse roof and walls are built to provide a continuous shape to this extraordinarily green house.
